The Assignment Impact Loop — From Purchase to Submission

A strategic loop that enhances product experience and strengthens brand value.

Project Background

Client Partner - Hahow

Hahow is a leading online learning platform in Taiwan, focused on practical learning outcomes and community growth.

To improve learning effectiveness, the team identified low assignment submission rates as a key factor behind reduced course completion.

For this competition, the team proposed an HMW (How Might We) centered around assignments as a starting point

How might we showcase learner work to inspire trust and increase sales?

How might we showcase learner work to inspire trust and increase sales?

The focus of this initiative is on sales-oriented strategies and designing the pre-purchase user flow.

SWOT / Competitor Analysis

Based on the existing interface and initial competitor analysis, we found that Hahow offers the most diverse course selection and has a significant user base advantage. As online learning continues to grow, highlighting the role of assignments could be a key opportunity to differentiate Hahow from other platforms and enhance the overall user experience.

Surveys & Interviews

Surveys & Interviews

Surveys & Interviews

Based on 130 valid survey responses, initial findings revealed that assignment outcomes currently play a relatively weak role in purchase decisions, indicating significant potential for impact growth.

8 User Interviews

To further explore unclear areas from the survey, we selected several participants for in-depth online interviews. By using contextual scenarios to guide the discussion, we identified potential solutions aligned with the company’s core HMW:

“How might we showcase learner work to inspire trust and increase sales?”

User Profiles & Personas

User Profiles & Personas

User Profile Definition

From interview feedback, we outlined user profiles based on their attitudes toward assignments and their motivations for purchasing courses. We identified four distinct quadrants, aiming to increase purchase intent among users who currently place low value on assignments by enhancing the appeal of assignment displays.

User Profile Definition

Persona

Early research allowed us to narrow user profiles down to two key types.

Assignment-Oriented

Goal-Driven Learner

Max - Working Professional

Clear learning goals, seeking practical and applicable skills (in-depth)

Course Purchasing Behavior:

Directly searches for specific types of courses or instructors. Focuses on efficiency and expects to quickly obtain valuable knowledge.

Needs Regarding Assignments:

Hopes assignments can clearly reflect course outcomes and provide guidance. Helps assess whether the course aligns with personal learning goals, and offers immediately applicable hands-on experience.

Assignment-Oriented

Explorer

Kath - Recent Graduate

Interested in learning, but still exploring goals through observation and curiosity

Course Purchasing Behavior:

Rarely uses the search bar; tends to browse freely through various courses that spark interest, looking for inspiration or points of attraction.

Needs Regarding Assignments:

Hopes to be inspired by clear assignment showcases or sample work. Engaging assignments can highlight a course’s practicality or fun factor, encouraging course decisions.

User Journey Optimization

In the interviews, we found that assignment outcomes appeared only at a few points along Hahow’s current user journey. To explore further possibilities, we introduced additional touchpoints along the existing flow to expand the role and application of assignments.

Storyboard Testing – Hypothesis Validation

Through storyboard-driven interviews, we explored user expectations for course assignments. Key drivers of impact and purchase intent include: showcasing outcomes, social feedback, peer sharing, and career relevance.

Add detail to the assignment interface and highlight instructor feedback to encourage students to submit their work.

Mid-Term: Highlighting Outstanding Work

Introduce reward badges for excellent assignments and add a student portfolio section to increase visibility. This helps potential learners better understand course content and the value of completing a course.

  • “It’s really helpful to have all the assignments in one place — I can get a clear overview of everything.”

  • I imagine it’ll be updated regularly — if there’s something new and surprising each time, I’d be more likely to check back and explore. It definitely makes me more interested in browsing assignments.

  • It’s way better with section titles. I get what the course is about right away, and it actually makes me want to buy it.

  • If it’s picked by the teacher, I’d trust it more. And with some extra info, I wouldn’t mistake it for just an ad.

  • Now I can check out the student portfolios to see if their work matches what I’m looking for — and if it does, it’s a total magic moment!

Beyond the Interface

How to Effectively Increase Course Conversions

How to Effectively Increase Course Conversions

After optimizing the interface and enhancing assignment visibility, the next key step is to strengthen content credibility through social sharing and the continuous input of high-quality assignments — ultimately driving conversion.

The Formation of a Strategic Loop

The Formation of a Strategic Loop

Through this series of short-, mid-, and long-term plans, assignments take on multiple roles across the user journey—from attracting learners before purchase with high-quality examples, to empowering them to create excellent work themselves. This process ultimately builds a positive cycle that drives higher course conversion on the platform.
